Maximize your time with these 6 tips that will make your business trips more efficient.

If you’re an entrepreneur or busy professional, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve been on your fair share of business trips. And if you have, you’re also very aware of how exhausting – and at times stress-inducing – they can be.

Between air travel, living out of your suitcase, and dealing with back-to-back meetings with potential partners and clients, taking a little break from business trips the past two years might not have been the worst thing. And now that the world is returning to business as usual, you may want to rethink your business trip strategy in a way that will not only help you get the most out of your trip but will maximize efficiency.

Here are some essential tips for business travel that’ll have you smooth sailing in no time.

Tip #1: Consolidate Your Packing

When going away on business, you’ll want to take a minimalist approach to packing. Packing light means having to keep track of fewer items – and fewer baggage fees. Make a checklist of all your business trip essentials. And when we say ‘essentials,’ we mean ‘essentials.’ Refer to this checklist for every trip until it’s ingrained in your mind, so you never have to stress about what to pack. In addition, make sure you have a clear agenda for what you’ll be doing and where you’ll be going, just in case you need anything extra.

Tip #2: Check-in Online

Since this isn’t 2005, there’s no reason for you to ever stop at a finicky check-in kiosk before boarding your flight. Save time by checking in online, which is usually available 24 hours before your take off-time. While you’re at it, download your ticket onto your smartphone. This way, if you’re only flying with a carry-on, you can skip check-in entirely and make your way straight to the security line.

Tip #3: Be Consistent with your Airlines

If you can, try your best to fly with the same airline whenever possible. This will allow you to establish a clear flow and routine with your travels. Most airlines have specified terminals at airports, meaning you’ll likely depart from the same terminal every time. You’ll be able to streamline parking, checking in, going through customs, and finding your gate since you’ve already done the routine several times before.

Tip #4: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

There’s nothing more dehydrating than sitting in a plane filled with stale air for hours on end. Staying hydrated is a game-changer when it comes to frequent travels. It’ll help you avoid headaches, dizziness, fatigue, not to mention the generally crabby attitude that inadvertently manifests while travelling. None of which are ideal when you’re due to bring your A-game at a business meeting. Get yourself a water bottle and keep it full at all times.

Tip #5: Charge Up

While most airports and aircrafts offer outlets for your devices, trust me when I say charging everything the night before will be your best bet. Keeping everything charged beforehand from your smartphone to your laptop and tablet will give you peace of mind knowing you’ll never be threatened by that red battery just when you need to pull up a document or send an email. For good measure, you should also consider carrying a portable charger with you. Oh, and be sure to keep that charged up the night before as well.

Tip #6: Have an Agenda

Having clear goals and an itinerary for your business trips in advance will not only make things easier on you, it’ll motivate you to get stuff done. Be intentional about your work trips and try to maximize their potential for your business. Know exactly where you’ll be going, who you’re meeting, and what you’ll be doing during your downtime, if any. Business trips, by all means, don’t have to be all work and no play, but planning your trip accordingly will allow you to experience it all with a clearer head.

When planning a work trip, there are lots of variables to keep in mind, details to comb through, reservations to create, and schedules to align. And even after all that is done, you still have to contend with the possibility of problems popping up along the way.
